Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons Granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup Lukewarm milk
  • 1/4 cup Sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 tablespoons Softened butter
  • 2 ½ cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1 ½ tablespoons Milk for brushing before baking

Equipment

  • Small bowl
  • Larger mixing bowl
  • Greased bowl

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the warm milk, granulated sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes. When it’s ready, it should be bubbly and foamy on top. This indicates that the yeast is working.
  2. In a larger mixing bowl, combine the condensed milk, softened butter, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon. Once the yeast mixture is activated, add it to this bowl.
  3. Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the wet mixture, stirring with a spatula or wooden spoon. Continue mixing until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, turn out the dough. Knead it gently for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can add a touch more flour if it feels too sticky.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.
  6. After the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a floured surface again, then shape it into a loaf or rolls, depending on your preference.
  7. Place the shaped dough into a greased baking dish. Cover with the kitchen towel and allow it to rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  8. While the dough is rising for the second time, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Before baking, brush the surface of the dough with a little milk. Bake it in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until it's golden brown. The aroma should start to fill your kitchen, bringing back those warm memories.
  10. Once baked, remove the loaf from the pan and let it cool slightly. Brush the top with extra butter for an added layer of flavor. Now, slice and serve!

Notes

  • Ensure the yeast is fresh. Old yeast doesn’t rise as effectively, so check the expiration date.
  • Use lukewarm milk. Too hot can kill the yeast, while too cold won’t activate it properly.
  • Don’t rush the rising times. Each rise is crucial for creating that fluffy texture.
  • Experiment with flavors. You can add in chocolate chips, dried fruits, or nuts for a twist.
  • Consider humidity levels. Depending on your environment, you might need to adjust flour measurements slightly.
