Ingredients

  • 500 g high-quality minced beef or lean beef for a lighter option
  • 1 large free-range egg
  • 12 Jacob's cream crackers or any other plain crackers
  • 8 sprigs fresh flat-leaf parsley or curly parsley
  • Optional: 2 heaping teaspoons Dijon mustard for added tang
  • Olive oil for cooking
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar optional, for a slight sweetness
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika optional, for extra depth
  • 3 ripe tomatoes sliced
  • 1 red onion thinly sliced
  • 3-4 gherkins thinly sliced
  • 1 head of cos or round lettuce or any leafy greens
  • Optional: 6 slices aged Cheddar cheese or your preferred cheese
  • 6 soft burger buns whole wheat or brioche for variety

Equipment

  •  large pan or grill

Method

  1. Start by assembling all the ingredients at your kitchen counter. It makes the cooking process smoother. You’ll want everything within reach to avoid any last-minute scrambling.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the minced beef, egg, crushed Jacob's cream crackers, chopped parsley, and the optional Dijon mustard. Using clean hands, mix everything gently but thoroughly. You want to ensure that all ingredients are evenly distributed, creating a well-seasoned, cohesive patty.
  3. Once mixed, divide the mixture into equal parts. Aim for six patties, roughly the same size. Roll them into balls and then gently flatten them into discs. At this point, press your thumb into the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up during cooking.
  4. Next, heat a large pan or grill over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil to coat the surface lightly. You'll hear a satisfying sizzle as you place the patties in the pan.
  5. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on one side. Flip them when they develop a beautiful golden-brown crust. If you’re adding cheese, be sure to place a slice on the patties in the last minute of cooking, allowing it to melt.
  6. Once cooked, take your burger buns and lightly toast them if you like. Start by layering some lettuce on the bottom, followed by the burger patty. Top it with sliced tomatoes, onions, and gherkins. Finish with the other half of the bun.
  7. Plate the burgers alongside your chosen sides—be it fries, salad, or coleslaw. It's time to dig in. You’ve earned it!

Notes

  • Use Quality Ingredients: High-quality beef and fresh toppings will elevate your burger.
  • Don’t Overwork the Mixture: Mixing too much can lead to tough patties. Just combine until it’s mixed well.
  • Experiment with Seasonings: Feel free to add spices like garlic powder for extra flavor.
  • Let the Patties Rest: After cooking, let them sit for 2-3 minutes for juices to redistribute.
  • Customize Your Toppings: The beauty of a burger is its versatility. Use whatever fresh veggies or sauces excite your palate!
